It’s Sunday and Monday’s staring at us in the eye. Work’s ok but never better than weekends, most times anyway.
So, here I am heading for a game of futsal on a Sunday while praying the weather holds up so I can get to enjoy the benefits of sports on weekends. Here’s what they are:
Meeting friends
There’s never a better reason to get together with friends other than a common interest. If a friend randomly calls you up for coffee, likelihood is he/she is now an insurance agent. Or something. You get my drift. But, if a friend randomly calls you up for football, it’s mostly simpler. They are short of numbers or your friend remembers you and enjoys your company enough to want to connect with you in this manner. And when you have a group of friends who share this common interest and meet up regularly, all hell breaks loose.
Keeping fit
All too obvious. Five to six days a week, eight to ten hours a day we are slouched in front of the computer and slaving to the big $. That’s no life and without some form of exercise or sports to keep fit, you will soon literally have no life. What’s wealth without health?
(As I write this, it has started to pour. =( )
Camaraderie
If you have been through the army or national service, you would understand the joy and kick one gets from having a team that complements one another and the camaraderie that comes with it. It’s all fun when people from different walks of life come together, put in their shift and work together for a common goal. Ok, I get it, work has it. (For some, at least) The joy and high of team spirit from sports is a way quicker fix though. For football, a match of 90 minutes gets you experiencing elation (when your team scores), frustration (when you concede) and jubilation (especially when you win a hard fought game). For futsal, even better. You get these highs (and lows) with your mates within ten minutes.
There, you have it - the benefits of sports on weekends. The rain has stopped and I’m off for my game.
