Buffet @ CafeBiz Hotel Jen Tanglin

Cafebiz Jen Hotel

Cafebiz is a restaurant on the lobby level of Hotel Jen Tanglin (which was formerly known as the Traders Hotel). It offers a buffet dinner at $60++ per pax on weekdays. Currently, there is a one-for-one special deal with UOB credit cards whereby one person eats for free. The effective price per person, inclusive of tax and service charge, can thus be as low as $35. That is good value for the variety and quality of the food available at the buffet. We were there on a weekday evening and the place was full. They have to turn away a number of people who arrived later without prior reservations.

Cafebiz Hotel Jen The restaurant has a contemporary colourful decor. It has full height glass panels on one side and opens up to the hotel lobby on the other side. The place has an airy expansive feel. Although there were many tables in the area which was not too large, and there were many people there, we did not get the feeling that it was congested.

The staff was courteous, efficient and attentive. We were seated near the entrance and saw how the staff had to deal with a few customers whom we thought were rather unreasonable with their demands. The patience and politeness of the staff in those trying circumstances were quite commendable.

CafeBiz Hotel Jen offers an international buffet. The food was laid out in typical Singapore buffet style - by clusters. There were cold seafood starters, sushi and sashimi, local street food samplers, Chinese dim sum, western staples such as roasts and pastas, Indian curries and nann and, of course, desserts.

From the cold starters station, the crabs. prawns, mussels and scallops were fresh and delightful. The Japanese counter had soba, tuna and salmon sashimi and a good variety of sushi. As usual, that counter was very popular and the chefs had to replenish the trays there constantly. There was a wide selection of Indian dishes and we thought the masala chicken was very good - succulent and tasty. From the Western counter, we liked the roast lamb and Yorkshire pudding the best. They also have very good bread to go with the soups.

The dim sum items were quite limited but we enjoyed the soon kueh. The braised pork knuckles were quite good. There was a station serving Chinese and local food. The roast duck, roast pork and chicken were cut to order. Satay was grilled at the station. Beef soup, Singapore laksa and dry wanton noodles would be prepared by the chefs there. The 2 most popular items at the station were the kueh pie ti and oyster omelet and we found them to be among the most delicious items we had that evening. Cafebiz Hotel Jen

The wide desserts spread was definitely tempting. There were an assortment of cakes, bread pudding, jelly, durian puree and Malay kuehs. You could also make your own ice kachang, create your own ice cream sundae, have fun with the chocolate fondue fountain or try your hands at making plain waffles different and delicious with the available sauces and toppings. Besides coffee and tea, fruit juices were available. There was also a special red tea which you could mix with colourful flavoured syrups.

On the whole the quality of the food was not great but good enough. The more outstanding items were the local street food, like the satay and oyster omelet. The buffet at CafeBiz Hotel Jen would probably be a good option for visitors who would like to have a sampling of Asian and local food in a convenient and comfortable environment. For local ordinary patrons, with the one-for one special, $35 for a very substantial meal with desserts and drinks is quite a good deal.
