There is a new club in Singapore - The Tiong Bahru Club. As you enter the club premises on Eng Hoon Street, you see the Club Rules displayed prominently above the bar. The one that caught my attention was “No Flirting with Cashier“.
The Tiong Bahru Club Singapura mimics, with a humorous twist, the traditional stuffy town clubs, but is really a chai cafe, bistro and bar. The Club describes itself as a heritage-style vintage bistro, taproom and an all day communal leisure diner.
The premises used to be occupied by a traditional coffee shop and it is not surprising that The Tiong Bahru Club’s decor has many elements of coffee shops of bygone era as well as vintage paraphernalia.
The al fresco dining areas of the bistro are even more interesting than the interiors. An eclectic mix of furniture adds colour and character to the rustic sidewalks of Tiong Bahru. You wonder whether the red tricycle for goods chained to the No Entry signpost is part of the decor.
The Tiong Bahru Club Singapura has an All Day Menu with a mixed bag of offerings. There are Thai sausages, Indonesian Soto Ayam, Eurasian Devil’s Curry as well as Aglio Olio and German Pork Knuckles.
I had a Tandori Chicken Roti ($8.50) which was a toasted wrap of marinated chicken and vegetables. The thin flat bread was crispy and nice enough to eat on its own. The chicken was well marinated and was tasty, especially when the mint and chilli sauces were added. To end the meal on a sweet note, I had a platter of Malaysian kuehs ($3.80) with iced cappuccino ($5).
Being part of the tea chain, Chaiholics, the bistro offers a wide range of chai, which is essentially Indian spiced milk tea. It also serves coffee, lassi, beers, ciders and wine as well as other cold and hot beverages.
A sister club will be opened by Chaiholics soon in Namly Avenue, Bukit Timah - to be called The Namly Club Singapura.
The Tiong Bahru Club Singapura is certainly an interesting place. Even when the novelty factor wears off, the variety of food and drinks on its menu will be a good reason to visit the Club - in spite of the many Club Rules. By the way, I did not see any cashier at the counter!
