We were intrigued by the signs of a store in Bugis Junction. For a moment, we wondered if the raunchy scene of old Bugis Street was back - complete with sexy bunnies.
Alas, Sifu Bunnery was just offering something very common and Singaporean - food. We realised that the Bunnery was a bakery specialising in BBQ pork bun and custard bun. Sifu has a take-away counter for their signature buns as well as a dining section serving a wide array of Hong Kong cafe style food.
They have eight reasonably priced signature dishes. We ordered two of them, the Beef Stew Rice ($10.80) and Char Siew Bun ($1.20), plus Soup Noodle with Fried Beancurd Rolls ($9.80), and a Yuzu Cheese Bun ($1.20).
The food was served promptly and was well presented. We thought the quail egg on the rice was quite a nice touch. We liked the fried beancurd rolls which were crispy and delicious. The buns were soft and fluffy - quite enjoyable.
We ordered a Custard Banana Roll ($5.80) for dessert. It came with a scoop of coconut ice cream. The elements of the dessert did not combine well, though we enjoyed the ice cream.
On the whole, the food was what we would expect of typical Hong Kong cafe fare - not bad but not great. For everything which Sifu offers, we can probably find a better alternative somewhere nearby. However, with its reasonable prices and pleasant modern environment, Sifu is a place we will consider if we want a quick simple meal in a comfortable setting.
